Getting to know LAMEDITECH LASER BLOOD COLLECTING UNIT through interview

For those who feel great burden with the conventional blood collecting method, Lameditech, a professional health care corporation has introduced 'HandyRay,' a laser blood collecting unit. It is the only laser blood collecting unit that has received approval from the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and is a peripheral blood that has offset the drawbacks of conventional needle-using device (Lancet).

As it accompanies smaller amount of pain, it is appropriate for children diabetes patients who are afraid of needles, and as it is small in size, it boasts high portable capability, and thus it is perfect to be used not only at hospitals but also at homes and by individuals.

As it is first of its kind domestically, Handy Ray, a laser blood collecting unit is garnering much attention followed by continuous inquires. We met with Doctor Lee Jong-woo of Seoul Samsung Physician to ask some questions.

Q. Why is blood sugar management through blood collection crucial for diabetes patients?
A. The prevalence of diabetes is increasing due to Western diets. 10% of Korea's population are diabetes patients, and considering those who have high risk of becoming diabetes patients, it can be said that approximately 10 million Koreans are either suffering from diabetes or are exposed to the risk of such ailment. When one is diagnosed with diabetes, full recovery is difficult, therefore blood sugar management is most important than anything else. Failure in blood sugar management for diabetes patients can lead to the occurrence of complications including loss of sight and diabetic foot ulcers.

Q. How is Handy Ray, introduced by Lameditech differ from other products?
A. Although we are used to the conventional method that has been used for a long time, it also accompanies the problem of inflammation, pain and difficulty in stopping bleeding. Checking blood sugar with laser blood collecting unit accompanies relatively lower resistance from patients as well as pain. Users are also high satisfied as the amount of blood collection is just appropriate to be used for checking blood sugar.

Q. Handy Ray is known to have relatively less pain. What is the principle of this?
A. Handy Ray uses safe laser, and cuts through the skin in a short period of time (less than 1/10,000 sec). Therefore, blood collecting can be done in a short period of time, and the depth of the penetration is swallow, thereby accompanying less pain.

Q. Are there no concerns of secondary infection with Handy Ray?
A. As Handy Ray does not use needles, it does not have secondary infection risks including stinging. In addition, it is highly sanitary in that high amount of energy is created to sterilize the area.

Q. Is Handy Ray portable? Does it have any drawbacks in terms of portability including complexity, size or weight as it uses laser?
A. Handy Ray weight only 170g, and can be used by women and children. Those who are too accustomed to the conventional tools may find the procedures of Handy Ray, which is aimed to guarantee safety, to be complex at first. However, it is very simple to use and can be used conveniently as users do not have the need to change the needle.

Q. The conventional method accompanied side-effects including callus due to continued blood collection. What could be the possible side-effects of Handy Ray when it is repeatedly used?

A. The drawback of the current system is the formation of callus due to the continued process of cutting the skin tissue to collect blood and the area being re-attached. As for the laser blood collecting unit, it minimizes the formation of callus by using the principle of self-recovery of the cells of the skin that has been cut using the laser. This is the same process as the laser used by dermatologists for skin regeneration.

Q. Young diabetes patients who are afraid of needles, are reluctant to collect blood using needles. Can the laser blood collecting unit which accompanies low pain be helpful for young patients suffering from diabetes?
A. The unit has minimized the psychological fear of needles, and it can greatly help children diabetes patients and initial diabetes patients. As for young patients, who have to collect blood for the rest of their lives, may suffer from reduced senses in their fingers due to the formation of callus. In addition, needle mark that is left behind can have negative psychological effect.

Q. What other opinions can you share with us other than the aforementioned benefits and drawbacks?
 A. Approximately 10% of the global population is known to be classified as diabetes patients, and it's estimated that they use about 600 billion single-use needles annually. As Handy Ray uses lasers, it does not leave behind medical wastes, it will have positive environmental effect as well.
